They come from a recruiter who already knows you, calls you on a Tuesday, and says "I have something you should look at." The role isn't posted yet. It won't be for weeks. By the time it hits LinkedIn, the shortlist is already done.
This is how the market works for CFOs, Controllers, and VP Finance roles. The good ones are filled through recruiters before most people even know they exist.
The problem is: which recruiters? There are thousands of recruiting firms. Most of them are generalists who fill IT help desk roles on Monday and claim they do "executive finance search" on Tuesday. You don't want those people. You want the ones who do nothing but place finance leaders. The ones who know every CFO in their city. The ones PE firms call when they need a Controller for a new portfolio company by next month.
So I built this list.
157+ executive recruiters across the US who specialize in placing finance and accounting leaders. Not generic staffing people. These are Partners, Managing Directors, Founders, and VPs at firms that focus on finance. I vetted every name. If someone's title said "associate" or their firm didn't have a clear finance focus, they didn't make the cut.
How to use this
You don't need to be looking for a job to benefit from knowing recruiters. In fact, the worst time to meet a recruiter is when you need one. The best time is right now, when you don't.
- —If you're not looking: Connect with 3-5 of these people on LinkedIn. That's it. When something opens up that fits you, they'll reach out. It takes two minutes now and saves you months later.
- —If you're exploring: Email them directly with what you're looking for. The boutique firms on this list are much more responsive than the big global ones. They'll actually read your message.
- —If you're hiring: These recruiters can fill your open VP Finance or Controller role faster than your internal TA team, because this is all they do.
